It’s another fantastic day of soccer, starting with the noon ET Germany vs. Portugal match-up. We’ll have updates and analysis throughout the game, so stick with us and refresh often to catch every goal, penalty and flop.
Mercifully, Germany’s 4-0 win over Portugal is over. Thomas Muller’s hat trick led the way for a disciplined German squad who controlled the entire game. Relying on Cristiano Ronaldo proved to be a bad strategy for Portugal, as he had a tough time getting to the ball. Portugal’s problems were compounded by injuries and a stupid headbutt by Pepe, who was shown the red card.
Next, Portugal will play the U.S. on Sunday, likely without Pepe, who will most likely be suspended. Germany will face Ghana on Saturday.
The key to Germany’s great start is Muller:

It’s a hat trick for Thomas Muller, who scored on a rebound and gave Germany a 4-0 lead.
The bad news continues to roll in for Portugal. Fabio Coentrao was just carried off the field with an apparent groin injury.

Germany is starting to rest their best players. Mesut Oezil was pulled from the game at the 62nd minute.
Back to the game at hand, and an exhausted-looking Ronaldo didn’t score on his chance with a free kick in the 59th minute. He hasn’t had an effect on this game. It would make sense for Portugal to pull him to save him for the team’s next match-up.
Germany is up 3-0 on Portugal in the 53rd minute, and looking like a team on a whole different level than their opponent. Since these two teams make up the “Group of Death” with the U.S. and Ghana, what does this game mean for the U.S.?
Well, not much if the U.S. can’t play well today.
Another factor in Portugal’s troubles is that Ronaldo isn’t getting the ball much at all. ESPN reports he has just 15 touches, the fewest of any player who played the full first half.
Portugal is going to need a miracle to come back in this one. Pepe’s actions mean they are playing a man down. One of their starters was already injured. This now puts extra pressure on Cristiano Ronaldo, who was already carrying heavy expectations.
HALFTIME
The confrontation with Pepe did not shake Muller. He scored his second goal of the match, putting up Germany 3-0 as the game heads into halftime.
After rough play, and a confrontation with Muller where he headbutted the German player, Portugal’s Pepe was given a red card and thrown out of the game.
He put Portugal in a tough position, as they are already down 2-0. He could end up suspended for a game, which is why supporters of Team USA are happy.
Good news for USMNT? Portugal's 10 will have to chase here in the sun for the last hour thanks to Pepe. Could be tired for US game.
