Billy Beane has made a career for himself in baseball making out-of-the-box decisions and bucking traditional ways of thinking for a more progressive, analytical approach. So his latest career move shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as Beane will reportedly be advising Dutch soccer club AZ Alkmaar.
PA Sport on Twitter has the report:
Dutch soccer team AZ Alkmaar have appointed baseball innovator and @Athletics GM Billy Beane as an official adviser. @MLB #Eredivisie— PA Sport (@pasport)
"I am truly excited for the opportunity to be part of AZ Alkmaar in an advisory role, " Beane told PA Sport, via ESPN FC. "Despite being a great football club with a storied history, they face many of the challenges we have with the Oakland A's. My love for football and AZ's vision of the future of the club made this an attractive pursuit."
Per that report, Beane will advise the team from the United States and visit the club several times a year.
Beane was famously portrayed by Brad Pitt in the movie Moneyball, which chronicled his progressive roster moves and reliance on sabermetrics to rebuild the Oakland Athletics during his tenure as the team's general manager, starting in 1997 through the present.Christian Petersen/Getty Images
Certainly, Beane will bring a fresh perspective to the club and isn't a stranger to the game of soccer, as he claimed in 2011 that one of his idols is Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. AZ Alkmaar were wise to snatch up a progressive, unorthodox adviser like Beane, who will surely bring a new, fresh approach to the club's philosophy.
